January 2018 January Budget Actions

Wednesday, January 10th and Immediately after the Governor's statement

Governor Brown will release his January Budget Recommendations for California’s 2018-19 budget on or before the January 10th deadline. California Partnership, Californians 4 SSI and and the Health and Human Service Network will hold rallies and press conferences in Sacramento, San Francisco, Bakersfield, Los Angeles, Coachella and Riverside to respond to Governor Brown’s January Budget Proposal. Will Governor Jerry Brown’s ‘legacy budget’ invest in our communities? We will have a community responses at the listed locations throughout California. The state’s $7.5 billion in “unexpected cash” (this is an estimate from the Legislative Analyst's Office) will make it more difficult for the governor to justify the neoliberal austerity for the 20% of Californians living in poverty and the other 20% living “near poverty” (“near-poverty” to the U.S. Census means people struggling to pay for food and shelter). The rainy day fund is was also well funded in the last budget so the state is also well positioned for the governor's imagined impending economic apocalypse. The LAO states, "If the economy experiences a moderate recession, as shown in the bottom part, the state has enough reserves to cover its deficits until 2021‑22." (http://www.lao.ca.gov/Publications/Report/3718 ) One can hope governor Brown will, in his final year, use more accurate forecasts in this year’s budget recommendations then he did in last year's. Join California Partnership, Californians 4 SSI and and the Health and Human Service Network in Sacramento, San Francisco, Bakersfield, Los Angeles, San Bernardino, Coachella and Riverside to let Governor Brown know that the wealthiest state in wealthiest nation in the world should be ashamed that 40% of its residents live at or in poverty!
