California Groups Give Governor's Budget a Failing Grade

Community groups throughout California held actions and media conferences protesting the Governor's proposed budget cuts, and presented him with report cards showing that he is failing to protect children, elderly and disabled Californians.  More than 30 media outlets covered these actions.

In San Francisco, community members brought the Governor white carnations, each with the name of an individual who would be harmed by the proposed cuts.  Vince Fits, a member of the Justice and Advocacy Team at St. Anthony Foundation in San Francisco expressed the need for a new way of thinking about the California budget when he said,  "We can find a way to do this. We can meet all the needs of the people."

In Los Angeles, community leaders were first barred from entering the state building, but were eventually able to deliver their poster-sized report card to the Governor's office.

"Despite California's terrible fiscal situation, the Governor is making some of the worst possible decisions," said Sydney Kamlager of Community Voices. "The cuts he's proposed need to be rejected and everyone needs to pitch in to increase revenues that will contribute to fixing the mess. Slashing services while need is on a steady rise in this economic climate adds insult to injury for those most in need of help." In addition to grassroots community groups, SEIU Local 99 and United Teachers Los Angeles came out and reinforced the message that the proposed cuts hurt all of us.

San Diego groups were also able to deliver a report to the Governor, and LIFETIME held a spirited rally at the State Capitol in Sacramento where youth leaders as well as parents spoke out against the proposed cuts.

Thanks to all of our members and allies who came out on short notice to let the Governor know that we are ready to fight back
